Overview
Department of Cardiology at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital is among the specialized departments founded earliest in China and integrates clinical service, teaching and research. It features a nationally most advanced interventional therapies for coronary heart disease and radiofrequency ablation for arrhythmia.
After been established in 1953, our department has been authorized the Key Medical Discipline in Jiangsu and Nanjing, the Key Clinical Specialties in Jiangsu, the Cardiac Intervention Training Base for Diagnosis and Treatment of Coronary Heart Disease and Arrhythmia approved by National Health Commission, the Cardiac Intervention Training Base for Diagnosis and Treatment of Cardiovascular Diseases approved by the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the National Clinical Test Center, the Continuing Education Base of American College of Cardiology, the Demonstration Center of American Heart Association, the National Specialized Nursing and Training Base for Cardiovascular Diseases, the Training Base for Cardiovascular Physicians in Jiangsu, the Chest Pain Treatment Center in Jiangsu and Nanjing, the National Heart Failure Center, the National Atrial Fibrillation Center, the National Cardiac Intervention Training and Demonstration Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Arrhythmia, the National Center Familial Hypercholesterolemia of Excellence, Nanjing Clinical Medicine Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, Nanjing Translational Medical Center of Stem Cell Treatment for Acute Myocardial Infarction, etc. It is also one of the first Training Bases for Cardiovascular Physicians and the National Cardiogenic stroke Prevention and Control Bases, as authorized by the National Health Commission. In addition, our department has been approved as a doctoral and master degree authorization discipline, as well as a postdoctoral research station of Nanjing University.
Our department comprises 4 wards with 213 beds, including 36 beds in CCU, receiving morethan 8,000 inpatients andmore than 150,000 outpatients annually. We have 173 medical staff, including 2 doctoral tutors, 11 master tutors, 3 part-time professors, 8 associate professors, 9 chief physicians and 16 associate chief physicians. We have 35 staff with doctorate and 27 with mastership. Our cardiac intervention center has 5 cardiac catheterization rooms with an annual interventional operations of more than 9000 times, and it is equipped with advanced instruments including 64-lead electrophysiological recorders, DSA, 3D-UCG, IABP, IVUS, FFR, AED, CRRT, PICCO, cardiac output monitor, etc.
Conditions Treated
1. Our interventional screening and treatment for coronary heart diseases is at the domestic leading level. We are experienced in treating complicated coronary diseases such as chronic occlusive disease, left main disease, bifurcation disease, calcified lesions, etc. For patients with acute myocardial infarction, we have established the green channel and 24-hour duty system for emergency PCI to ensure timely treatment.
2. The institute of cardiac pacing and electrophysiology can routinely carry out pacemaker implantation and catheter ablation. More than 6,000 times of interventional treatments for arrhythmia have been performed till now, with a success rate over 98%, and no patient died because of surgery.
3. We are among one of first centers to carry out transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). We also creatively perform interventional therapy for congenital heart disease and stem cell therapy for acute myocardial infarction. Due to superior services, we enjoy a good reputation in Jiangsu and surrounding provinces.
Leadership
Professor Biao Xu, chief physician and doctoral supervisor, is the chief director of the Department of Cardiology. He has advanced experience in diagnosis and treatment of severe cardiovascular diseases, coronary heart disease, hypertension and heart failure. His researches in the fields of myocardium repair, heart remodeling, and function of vascular endothelial cells have satisfying and encouraging outcomes. These achievements ensure him positions in world-famous societies (FACC and FSCAI) and various professional organizations domestically. He has been recommended as “Key Medical Talents in Jiangsu” and enjoyed the government special allowance issued by state council. He is the vice-chairmen of the Integrated Cardiovascular Disease Society of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a member of the Chinese Medical Association Cardiovascular Branch, the chairman of the Jiangsu Medical Association Cardiovascular Branch, the designate-chairman of the Cardiovascular Physician Branch of Jiangsu Medical Doctor Association, etc. He also serves as an editor for Chinese Journal of Hypertension, Chinese Journal of Arteriosclerosis and Journal of Chinese Modern Medicine, and as an invited reviewer for Circulation，Circulation Research, J hypertension, ATVB, IJBM, etc.
Research &Achievement
Previous researches in our department has been focused on diabetic angiogenesis disorder, repair of myocardial damage, ventricular remodeling, etc. The continuous efforts have led to a series of encouraging outcomes. Within the past five years, our department has 5 projects granted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, more than 20 projects granted by provincial and municipal foundations. In 2012, our department was honored the “Jiangsu Science and Technology Innovation Team” and was awarded the first prize of Jiangsu Medical Prize, the third prize of Provincial Science and Technology Progress Prize, and the Second Prize of Nanjing Science and Technology Progress Prize. Afterward, it was awarded the third prize of Chinese Medical Science and Technology Prize and the first prize of Jiangsu Medical Prize in 2017, the second prize of Provincial Science and Technology Progress Prize and the first prize of Jiangsu Medical Prize in 2019. Up to now, we have more than 200 papers published in domestic core journals, and more than 200 papers published in SCI journals including Ann Inter Med, Circulation, JMCC,FASEB J, etc., with an average impact factor of 4.21.
Education & Training
The Department of Cardiology has been authorized to confer doctoral and master degrees on students from Nanjing University, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Xuzhou Medical University and Jiangsu University. It has also been approved as a postdoctoral research station of Nanjing University. Every year, our national and provincial training bases receive thousands of resident physicians, specialist physicians, specialist nurses and emergency personnel within Jiangsu Province and from surrounding provinces.
