Overview
The department of anesthesia is a postdoctoral workstation of Nanjing University, and accredited to award doctoral and master’s degree in anesthesiology of Nanjing University, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Southeast University and Xuzhou Medical College. There are now two doctoral supervisors and nine master supervisors. The department is member of the national geriatric anesthesia alliance, the orthopaedic and geriatric anesthesia training center of anesthesiology branch of Chinese Medical Association, member of the standing committee of anesthesiology branch of Chinese Medical Association, chairman unit of anesthesiology branch of Chinese Research Hospital Association, chairman unit of Jiangsu Academic Society of Anesthesiology and Jiangsu Society of Anesthesiologists, anesthesia training base of Health Department, standardized training center for Jiangsu grassroots anesthesiologist, excellent medical quality control unit of anesthesia in Jiangsu and is ranked first among Jiangsu anesthesia departments in “Fudan version of China's hospital ranking” released by Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University.
Conditions Treated
As the orthopaedic and geriatric anesthesia training center of Chinese Medical Association, our department provide high-quality anesthesia and specialized perioperative care to the elderly patients, organ transplantation (liver and kidney) and cardiovascular needs as well as patients with complicated scoliosis and in high-risk pregnancies. We provide world-class level of anesthesia risk control. Our clinicians perform more than 100,000 anesthetic procedures annually, including anesthesia in the operating room, anesthesia for daytime operation, painless diagnosis and treatment for outpatient, acute pain management and postoperative intensive care in AICU. A wide variety of anesthetic techniques are skillfully utilized in caring for our patients, such as management for urgent and critically ill patients, precise and comfortable anesthesia technology, perioperative blood management strategies, advanced management techniques for difficult airways, ultrasound guided nerve block, painless labor and postoperative multimode analgesia, and etc.
Leadership
Zhengliang Ma, the chief of Anesthesia Department, is honored with special government allowance of the State Council. Prof. Ma is a PhD supervisor of Nanjing University, Nanjing Medical University and Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. As an outstanding expert, he assumes major leadership roles in numerous influential associations. He is the chairman of Anesthesiology Professional Committee of Chinese Research Hospital Association, standing committee member of Anesthesiology branch of Chinese Medical Association, member of Chinese Research Hospital Association Council, standing editorial board member of Chinese Journal of Anesthesiology, standing editorial board member of International Journal of Anesthesiology and resuscitation, and the deputy editor in chief of the Journal of Clinical Anesthesiology. He also is group (outpatient, PACU, and daytime operation) leader of anesthesiology branch of Chinese Medical Association, deputy secretary-general of daytime operation alliance, former chairman of Anesthesiology branch of Jiangsu Medical Association, president of Jiangsu Society of Anesthesiologists, standing member of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary ERAS Professional Committee of Chinese Chapter of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, vice president of Chinese Association of Plastics and Aesthetics, vice chairman of Integrated Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine Professional Committee of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, and etc.
Prof. Ma has published over 80 articles in SCI journals, received five projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and awarded many times with the provincial Prize of Science and Technology Progress (twice with the second prize). As a director of medical key disciplines in Jiangsu Province, he has been rated as the Leading Medical Talent in Jiangsu Province, a second level talent of “333” Project in Jiangsu Province, a talent of the Six Talent Peaks Project of Jiangsu Province, a Young and Middle-aged Expert with Outstanding Contributions in Nanjing, and etc.
Xiaoping Gu, the vice chief of Anesthesia Department, is a PhD supervisor of Nanjing University, Nanjing Medical University and Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine. As a second instance judge of National Natural Science Foundation, Prof. Gu holds important positions in many associations. She is a standing committee member of Anesthesiology branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the vice chairman of Chinese Research Hospital Association, the vice chairman of professional committee of China Medical Women's Association, standing member of the first committee of Anesthesia and brain function branch of Chinese Neuroscience Society, standing member of Anesthesiology Professional Committee of Chinese Medical Education Association, standing member of Integrated Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine Professional Committee of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, the designate chairman of Anesthesiology branch of Jiangsu Medical Association, vice chairman of Jiangsu Society of Anesthesiologists, vice chairman of expert group of Jiangsu anesthesia quality control center, vice chairman of the 11th Committee of Anesthesiology branch of Nanjing Medical Association. She also is a standing editorial board member of the Journal of Clinical Anesthesiology, Chinese Journal of Anesthesiology, and editorial board member of International Journal of Anesthesiology and resuscitation, and etc.
Prof. Gu has published over 70 articles in SCI journals, received one key and three general projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, and awarded twice with the second provincial Prize of Science and Technology Progress. She has been awarded as a second level talent of “333” Project in Jiangsu Province, “the Sixth Batch of Top Young and Middle aged Talents in Nanjing”, key medical talent of “Project of invigorating health through science and education” of Jiangsu Health Department, and etc.
Research & Achievement
The department receives a large number of research grants, including 30 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (ranging from key to general and youth project), 24 provincial or ministerial level projects and 45 other projects. Our research topics include clinical pain evaluation and treatment together with related basic pain research, mechanisms of postoperative cognitive dysfunction, and perioperative organ protection. Over 140 papers were accepted by SCI journals and more than 160 papers were published in Chinese series journals. Our researchers have gained 55 patents of inventions and utility models, and awarded 21 times with the prize of science and technology (ministerial or provincial) as well as New Technology Introduction Prize.
Education & Training
As a national anesthesia training base, our department implements a standardized residency training program, and recruits residents with social identity or entrusted training by other units nationwide. Our residency program provides residents with comprehensive education in anesthesia, such as weekly theoretical courses, lectures, case discussion, and academic conference. We formulates a thorough clinical training plan for every resident, including one-year general training and two-year clinical anesthesia training, and implements strict training process management and evaluation. This training program aims to cultivate clinical experts with a broad breadth of experience in life saving.
